Summer gets a reputation for killing productivity.

People take vacations. Kids are home. The office is half-empty. It's easy to feel like nothing gets done.

But is that actually true?

A couple of books suggest summer's slower pace may be an advantage.

In Rest, Alex Soojung-Kim Pang argues that periods of recovery aren't separate from productive work—they're part of it. Many great thinkers alternated intense effort with deliberate downtime, using quieter periods to recharge and generate new ideas.

Similarly, in Deep Work, Cal Newport makes the case that meaningful progress comes from sustained concentration, not constant activity. A lighter summer schedule can create more opportunities for the kind of uninterrupted thinking that's hard to find the rest of the year.

Then there's the opposing view.

In The 4 Disciplines of Execution, Chris McChesney, Sean Covey, and Jim Huling argue that results come from maintaining focus on a few critical goals regardless of distractions, seasons, or circumstances. From this perspective, summer is just another excuse. The people who make progress are the ones who keep executing while everyone else slows down.

So who's right?

Probably all of them.

Summer may not be the season to work harder. But it might be the perfect season to work more intentionally—using the extra space to think, while still moving the important things forward.

The question isn't whether summer helps or hurts productivity.

It's whether you use it on purpose.

Thanks for reading,

Andrew
