Today's Topic 👉 Spiritual Wellness

Purpose isn't a luxury. It's a health behavior.

“Those who have a ‘why’ to live can bear with almost any ‘how.’”
— Friedrich Nietzsche, quoted by Viktor Frankl in Man’s Search for Meaning

Most people assume spiritual wellness is about religion. It isn’t.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) defines it simply. Spiritual wellness is about expanding a sense of purpose and meaning in life.

And the research on how it impacts your health is striking.

A review of ten long-term studies found that having a strong sense of purpose in life is associated with a 17% lower risk of dying early. (1)

A separate 14-year longitudinal study found purposeful people lived longer than their counterparts across all ages, all genders, retired or working. The longevity benefit wasn’t conditional on any demographic factor. It held for everyone. (2)

Separate from religion.
Separate from happiness.
Separate from positive affect.
Purpose is its own thing, and it predicts survival.

The distinction worth knowing: meaning and happiness are related but not the same.

Research consistently shows that purpose-based well-being (grounded in meaning, growth, and contribution) predicts health outcomes more robustly than pleasure-based well-being (feeling positive emotions and enjoyment). (3)

Purpose also doesn’t require a religious framework. Secular individuals show equivalent levels of meaning and well-being when they have clear values, direction, and engagement with something beyond themselves.

AT A GLANCE

  • Having a purpose helps you live longer. Ten long-term studies found this to be true independent of depression, disability, and other health factors. (1)

  • Focus on meaning, not happiness. Purpose-based well-being (meaning, growth, contribution) predicts health outcomes more robustly than pleasure-based well-being (positive emotion, enjoyment). (3)

  • Religion is one path, not the only one. Secular individuals with clear values and purposeful engagement show equivalent health outcomes to religious individuals. What matters is having a why, not which why.

Meaning in Life Questionnaire (MLQ)

A 10-item validated scale measuring two distinct dimensions:

  • Presence of meaning (how much meaning you currently experience) and

  • Search for meaning (how much you are seeking it).

Useful for distinguishing between people who feel purposeful and those actively looking. It’s free to access, validated, and widely used.
