🎂 The Birthday Fact Nobody Knows

In partnership with

Ever wonder why we put candles on birthday cakes... just to blow them out?

The tradition is far older than birthdays themselves.

In Panati's Extraordinary Origins of Everyday Things, Charles Panati explains that the ancient Greeks baked round cakes for Artemis, the goddess of the moon, and decorated them with lit candles to resemble the moon's glow. The rising smoke was believed to carry prayers to the heavens.

The birthday version came centuries later. In 18th-century Germany, children celebrated Kinderfest, where cakes were topped with one candle for every year of life—plus one extra candle to symbolize hope for the coming year. One more tradition emerged: all the candles were supposed to be extinguished in a single breath so the wish would come true.

Anthropologists love traditions like this because they reveal something bigger: humans rarely invent rituals from scratch. We borrow them, adapt them, and pass them along until we forget where they came from.

That's why blowing out birthday candles feels so "natural." You're participating in a custom that's been evolving for thousands of years.

The next time the cake comes out, you'll know you're not just making a wish—you're taking part in one of history's longest-running social rituals.

Just one more thing to file away in the "slightly smarter than yesterday" category,

Andrew

Quality, Tested CBD – and Why It Matters

CBD is increasingly popular, with hundreds of products designed to provide everything from better sleep to relief and recovery to increased focus. Once you’ve figured out which CBD formula is right for you, it’s important to be able to trust that what’s in the bottle or jar matches what’s on the label.

This is where third-party testing comes in. Independent labs test CBD products, verifying the cannabinoid content matches what’s on the label and screening for the presence of heavy metals, pesticides, and other contaminants.

Unlike some companies that cut corners, CBDistillery ensures that every single batch of their CBD products are tested by an accredited lab. And these test results are posted on their website, so you can see them before you place your order.
